Scooter seems to be acting up

Post by Baxter.17 on Tue May 15, 2012 1:09 am

First and second gear fine, Switch to third and hit about 30 Mph the scooter seems to be having trouble getting any faster and makes a funny crackling noise but after a few seconds of that it would normally just kick in and run and pick up speed normally without a problem, However it happened yesterday and the engine just wasn't kicking in and it was making a crackling noise all the way home, Still the same today.

Anybody know where the problem could lay? I thought it was just the engine heating up but it seems its not that.

does it seem to be going in and out of third until it finds it's place? if so it might be the cruciform

hmm, as you describe it doesnt sound as your jumping out of gear as jake has described
It could be a detonation issue. aka the term is 'pinking'
does it sound like tiny ball bearings being shook about ? or as you say a crackling sound.
this is to do with the stator , are you on points ignition.

Also, rubbish fuel can sometimes cause this in which a cylinder head redesign is needed , but disregard that option

Alright lads, It runs but when I start to hit the 30 mark (3rd gear) is starts to crackle, It doesnt sound like ball bearing rattling its more like the scooter is struggling to get any faster, Let alone run! Sounds as if it gets any faster itll die. :L

My dad done something with the spark plug and its gone back to the 2-3 seconds of "Crackling" then it runs fine after instead of crackling all the time!

It's not jumping in and out of gear Jake, Switching gears is fine.

take the cylinder head off and clean the carbon build up off, as from what your dad has done ...to me that says a detonation issue as previously mentioned

If you are going to clean the head and piston crown etc. I'd get some engine cleaner and brush them clean first them use some like wire wool, but be gentle not to score anything.

I found that carb cleaner and a scotch brite pad worked a treat on mine last time I de-coked. Just make sure you smear a ring of grease round the barrel to catch the shite and wipe it down when you're done.

I'm getting it looked at tomorrow by one of my dads mates, Hes been doing scooters since he was a youngster and has an idea of what it could be. Hopefully he can fix it.
Personally I wouldn't dare try taking anything off, Just in case lol
